Churchill’s enigma: the real riddle is why he cozied up to Stalin

A grumpy old Cincinnatus who feeds goats, dogs, cats, ducks, peafowl, a horse, and sundry avians, especially in the winter. From time to time you will see guns. 1. I don’t think there’s much puzzlement that Churchill quickly came to the aid of the Soviets in 1941 … “If Hitler invaded hell I would make at least a favorable reference to the devil in the House of Commons.” The enigma is why he continued to provide support long after the immediate crisis (Operation Barbarossa) was over. British and Commonwealth losses getting the Arctic convoys through to Russia were neither appreciated nor even much acknowledged by the Soviets.
